Creative Economy Workforce Coalition TRAINING GLOSSARY

The following CEW-C definitions are based on a continuum of work-based learning. The goal of this page is to create common language around creative economy career readiness, and to clarify and differentiate “training” definitions for employers, labor partners, organizations, and individuals.

  • CAREER TRAINING ACTIVITIES

    INTERNSHIP

    1. Planned structured learning experience that takes place in a workplace and is facilitated by an employer.

    2. Facilitate essential workplace skills training, including resume development, interview preparation, professional networking, set etiquette training, and/or industry fundamentals.

    3. Internship programs may be connected to a school program.

    REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

    1. Facilitate minimum of 144+ hours skills training specific to a craft, trade, or occupation.

    2. Facilitate minimum of 2000 hours paid on-the-job training in a specific craft, trade, or occupation.

    3. State and/or Federally approved program.

    UNION APPROVED TRAINING PROGRAM

    1. Facilitate essential set etiquette training, industry and labor union fundamentals, safety courses and certifications as determined by the local union.

    2. Facilitate craft-specific skills training by experienced union industry professionals and/or approved third party training vendors as determined by the local union.

    3. Facilitate craft-specific paid on-the-job training with a signatory company as determined by the local union.*

    *Training organizations must work directly with local unions to become approved training providers.

  • CAREER PREPARATION ACTIVITIES

    PRE-APPRENTICESHIP

    1. Facilitate skills training in direct partnership with a registered apprenticeship program.

    2. Facilitate work-based learning experience including mentorship and workplace simulations.

    3. State recognized program, when registered.

    MENTORSHIP

    1. Provide individualized supportive services including career guidance, individualized coaching and goal setting.

    2. Facilitate opportunities for networking, peer-peer or group mentorship, and listening circles.

    JOB SHADOW

    1. Visit to a workplace to observe and learn about the work environment.

    2. Exposure to a variety of careers.

    WORKPLACE SIMULATION

    1. Designed and facilitated in partnership with industry.

    2. Simulate workplace activities, workflows, environments and projects.

  • CAREER AWARENESS AND EXPLORATION ACTIVITIES

    1. Build awareness of career opportunities through career research and planning, expos and networking events, masterclasses and industry panels, and business and workplace tours.

    2. Identify interests, skills, and career possibilities through guided self-assessments and research.

    3. Explore opportunities for job shadows and workplace simulations.
